Why Amsterdam

Why Amsterdam captivates every group that visits

Why Amsterdam?

There are cities that impress. And then there are cities that genuinely move people. Amsterdam is firmly in the second category. For incentive travel, meetings, conferences and events, Amsterdam delivers something that very few destinations in the world can match — a combination of extraordinary accessibility, iconic venues, rich culture and a spirit of openness that makes every international guest feel immediately, completely at home.

Here is why event planners and incentive managers keep coming back

Schiphol airport Amsterdam

Unrivalled accessibility from across the globe

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the most connected airports in the world, with direct flights to over 300 cities across Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. For international incentive groups and conference delegates arriving from multiple origins, this is a significant practical advantage — almost everyone can reach Amsterdam on a single direct flight, without the connecting journeys that add fatigue and complexity to any programme.

From Schiphol, the city centre is just 17 minutes by direct train — one of the fastest airport-to-city connections in Europe. No long transfer coaches, no motorway traffic, no hour-long journeys from a distant airport. Your delegates land, clear customs and are in the heart of Amsterdam before they have had time to check their phones.

For groups arriving by rail from London, Brussels, Paris or Cologne, Amsterdam Centraal is equally well connected — making the city genuinely accessible to delegates across the whole of western Europe without the need to fly at all. For corporate programmes with sustainability commitments, this rail accessibility is an increasingly important advantage

A city designed for extraordinary programs

Amsterdam is one of the most logistically elegant cities in the world for group events. The historic city centre is compact and almost entirely walkable — your hotel, your meeting venue, your dinner location and your evening experience can all be within comfortable walking distance of each other. This eliminates the transfer time that eats into group energy and program momentum in larger, more sprawling cities.

The canal system adds a dimension that no other European city can replicate. Rather than coaches moving groups between locations, private canal boats become the transfer — turning every journey between venues into an experience in itself. Delegates do not sit in traffic; they glide past 17th-century canal houses with a drink in hand, watching the city drift by.

The city's flat geography and extensive cycling infrastructure also make Amsterdam uniquely suited to cycling-based programs and active incentive experiences — something that resonates particularly strongly with groups from Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands itself, and surprises and delights groups from markets where cycling is less embedded in daily life.

Amsterdam is also exceptionally safe, clean and easy to navigate independently — meaning delegates who want to explore in their free time can do so confidently, which adds to the overall quality of their experience and their impression of the destination.

extraordinary venues for incentives and events by Oranje DMC Amsterdam

Venues that exist nowhere else on earth

This is perhaps Amsterdam's single greatest advantage as an event destination. The density and diversity of genuinely extraordinary venues — venues that simply do not exist in any other city — is unmatched anywhere in Europe.

A private dinner in a 17th-century canal house on the Keizersgracht, its original wooden beams and Delft tile fireplaces intact, candles reflected in the canal below — this is an experience that can only happen in Amsterdam.

A gala evening in the Rijksmuseum atrium, Rembrandt's Night Watch presiding over your guests as they dine — again, only Amsterdam. A product launch in a converted NDSM Wharf industrial space on the waterfront, a canal warehouse that has been transformed into one of Europe's most dramatic event settings — Amsterdam again.

Beyond these signature venues, the city is full of hidden spaces that most visitors never discover — secret courtyard gardens, historic merchant guild halls, converted church spaces, private rooftop terraces above the Jordaan, candlelit brown cafés that have been serving guests since the Golden Age.

These are the venues that Oranje DMC Amsterdam accesses exclusively for our clients, through relationships built over more than a decade in this city.

For larger conferences and conventions, Amsterdam also offers world-class purpose-built facilities. The RAI Amsterdam is one of Europe's premier convention centres, hosting major international congresses across every industry.

The Beurs van Berlage — the city's magnificent former stock exchange — offers a grand historic setting for large-scale events with up to 2,000 guests. Hotel Okura Amsterdam, the Hilton Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Marriott all offer extensive conference facilities alongside exceptional accommodation.

The beautiful surprise called Amsterdam by Oranje DMC Amsterdam

A destination that surprises even seasoned travellers

The most well-travelled incentive guests — the ones who have been to Dubai, Singapore, New York and Tokyo — consistently cite Amsterdam as one of the destinations that surprised them most. This is one of the city's most powerful qualities as an incentive destination: it exceeds expectations even for people who think they know what to expect.

The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House are world-class cultural institutions that resonate deeply with international visitors across every background and every market. But Amsterdam's cultural richness goes far beyond its famous museums — the Jordaan neighbourhood's independent galleries, the NDSM Wharf's street art scene, the city's extraordinary concentration of 17th-century architecture, the vibrant food markets and the diversity of its restaurant scene all contribute to a destination that rewards exploration and always has something new to discover.

The food and drink scene in Amsterdam has transformed dramatically over the past decade. The city now boasts an outstanding collection of Michelin-starred restaurants, innovative Dutch cuisine, exceptional international dining and a craft drinks culture — Dutch gin, craft beer and natural wine — that makes every group dinner an experience rather than just a meal. Amsterdam's culinary scene is particularly well suited to incentive programmes because it combines world-class quality with genuine local character — guests feel they are eating Amsterdam, not just eating well.

Amsterdam's famous spirit of openness and tolerance creates a social environment that is uniquely comfortable for international groups from diverse markets and backgrounds. The city is used to welcoming the world — over 180 nationalities call Amsterdam home — and this cosmopolitan ease translates into an atmosphere where every guest, regardless of where they come from, feels genuinely welcome.

The four seasons to travel to Amsterdam by Oranje DMC Amsterdam

Amsterdam through the seasons

Amsterdam is a year-round destination, but each season offers a different character and different opportunities for event programmes.

Spring

— April & May The most visually spectacular time to visit. Tulip season transforms the Dutch countryside into a canvas of colour, Keukenhof is in full bloom and Amsterdam's canal-side terraces come alive with the first warm days of the year. April and May are the most popular months for incentive programmes — book well in advance.

Summer — June, July & August

Long evenings, warm temperatures and the full energy of Amsterdam's outdoor culture. Canal-side dinners, rooftop events and open-air experiences are at their best. The city is busier with leisure tourists but remains very manageable for corporate groups with a DMC handling logistics.

Autumn — September & October

One of the best-kept secrets in Amsterdam event planning. The summer crowds have gone, the light is golden and extraordinary and the city has a quieter, more intimate feel that suits incentive programmes beautifully. Hotel rates are often more competitive and venue availability improves significantly.

Winter

— November, December & January Amsterdam in winter is magical — particularly in December when the Amsterdam Light Festival transforms the canals into an extraordinary outdoor gallery of light installations. Candlelit canal dinners, warming Dutch cuisine and the intimate atmosphere of the city's brown cafés create an incentive experience with a completely different character to any other time of year.

Events and incentives beyond Amsterdam by Oranje DMC

Amsterdam and the wider Netherlands

Amsterdam is the natural anchor for any Netherlands program — but the country as a whole offers remarkable variety within a very compact geography. Rotterdam is just 40 minutes by train, The Hague 50 minutes, Utrecht 30 minutes. This means a multi-day program can combine Amsterdam as the base with genuinely different destination experiences on day trips or overnight extensions, without significant travel time.

The Dutch countryside — tulip fields, windmills, historic fishing villages and national parks — adds a layer of authentic Dutch character that pure city programs cannot provide. A program that combines two nights in Amsterdam with a day in the Zaanse Schans and Volendam, or a tulip field experience in the Bollenstreek, gives delegates a richer and more complete experience of the Netherlands than Amsterdam alone.

Oranje DMC Amsterdam covers every corner of the Netherlands — from the coastal beauty of Zeeland to the grandeur of Maastricht in the south. Whatever your program requires, we know exactly where to go and exactly how to make it extraordinary.
